Independence day

Op 4 juli 1776 werd in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) ‘The Declaration of Independence’ ondertekend door de 13 koloniën . Deze dag staat bij de Amerikanen bekend als ‘Independence Day’. Elk jaar vieren miljoenen Amerikanen de onafhankelijkheid van de Britten.

Een stukje uit de onafhankelijkheidsverklaring:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” – Thomas Jefferson

Stars and Stripes

Bij het ontstaan van een nieuw land, hoort uiteraard ook een vlag. Sinds de onafhankelijkheid kende de vlag al 28 verschillende uitvoeringen. In 1960 werd de vlag voor de laatste keer gewijzigd toen Hawaii als 50e staat toetrad tot de United States of America.

De horizontale lijnen in rood en wit stellen de 13 oorspronkelijke koloniën voor. De 50 sterren staan voor de 50 Staten van Amerika.

The Pledge of Allegiance:
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.“

The Star-Spangled Banner

Het Amerikaanse volkslied is een verwijzing naar de Amerikaanse vlag en werd in 1814 neergeschreven als een gedicht door Francis Scott Key.

“O say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave”
